Continue to celebrate the ocean with Ocean Conservancy, Surfrider Foundation’s Humboldt Chapter and Humboldt Baykeeper with Ocean Night at Arcata Theatre Lounge.

On Thursday, Dec. 3, Ocean Night presents the North Coast premiere of Dear & Yonder, the story of “daring ladies united by the sea” by Tiffany Campbell and Andria Lesser. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Films start at 7 p.m. A $2 donation is requested. A raffle takes place after the screening. The film features many women surfing their beloved home breaks (the “Dear”), such as San Francisco bodysurfer Judith Sheridan’s formidable waves and Santa Cruz surfer/shaper Ashley Lloyd who seeks out ecologically sustainable materials available in order to perfect her craft. Other women venture well beyond the comfort of their home breaks to the far reaches of the earth (the “Yonder”), including Liz Clark who is single-handedly sailing around the world in search of waves and new shores. Explosive top surfing rofessionals, Sofia Mulanovich, Stephanie Gilmore, Silvana Lima, Coco Ho and others travel to Indonesia and showcase their skills on some of the best waves on Earth.

Primarily shot on 16mm film by expert cinematographers: Thomas Campbell, Scott Soens, Bali Strickland, Tiffany Campbell, John Smart and Dave Homcy, the imagery is further enhanced by music selections mined from the vast world of sound including original compositions by accomplished violinist Jennifer Curtis, underground band of surfers The Rustangs and local musicians from the Tuamotus Islands. More music is provided by Vetiver, Black Mountain, The Magnetic Fields, Tim Cohen, Calexico and Tussle. Josh and Jason Diamond, editors of Seedling, Sprout, Thread and, most recently, The Present, apply their skills in the editing suite, and artists Jeff Canham, Nat Russell and Lori Damiano lend their talents throughout the project.

Campbell and Lesser tie these carefully crafted pieces together in a rare and genuine story about our human bond with the sea told from the female perspective: “Our hope is for the depth and beauty of the film to traverse perceived boundaries and for each viewer to take a meaningful piece with them that will percolate positively back into our communities and lineups. Dear & Yonder is our way of giving something back to the thing we love.”

On Nov. 14, Surfrider Foundation’s Humboldt Chapter celebrated our first year of “reconstitution” with a few hundred of our friends in the Arcata Theatre Lounge.

While the chapter has been around for nearly 20 years, a drop in activity necessitated a concerted effort to get things going again in 2008. And get going they did! We’ve doubled our memberships, increased our funds tenfold, rebuilt the Jetty shower, cleaned beaches and a piece of U.S. Hwy. 101, promoted reusable bags and water bottles, and generally reached out on behalf of the North Coast’s ocean, waves and beaches.

In the works are improvements at Moonstone Beach and Camel Rock, as well as the establishment of a water quality lab dedicated to ocean testing. None of this would have happened or be happening without the phenomenal support of the local community members and businesses who’ve offered money, venues, raffle and auction prizes, and volunteer labor.

So, from Surfrider Humboldt, THANK YOU for your contribution. With your help, our chapter raised over $3,500 in a single evening. Not only was the event financially lucrative, but the joy of so many families – surfing and other – having fun at our event helps ensure future generations will continue the work of protecting the North Coast. Thanks again for helping make it all happen!

Remember that guy that thought he could surf big Harbor and ended up washed in at King Salmon? He had to hitchhike back around the bay to the parking lot? Meanwhile the Coast Guard helicopter and boats were searching for him? And remember those two guys who thought they’d surf whitewater at Power Poles, but ended up washed down the spit, unable to get to shore? The Coast Guard had to pluck them from the water. And that girl who thought she’d ride foam at the Jetty and got sucked into the rip? She screamed for help and was lucky a couple Coasties were nearby to rescue her. And all the people who’ve been too close when the big waves hit and ended up dead or close to it? Be smart out there, folks. The ocean puts on a good show. If you’re not an experienced big wave surfer, sit back and watch the show from a safe distance.

Shot in the late ’70s STYLEMASTERS chronicles the progression of surfing in this pivotal time, documenting the lifestyle and performance of some of the most influential surfers ever.”

In January: The Cove, “a 2009 exposé of the annual killing of about 2,300 dolphins in a National Park at Taiji, Wakayama in Japan. The film was directed by former National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos, and was filmed secretly during 2007 using underwater microphones and high-definition cameras disguised as rocks.”

Wednesday, Oct. 21, 6 p.m.: Greenhouse Boardshop and Juice Bar is hosting a movie premiere of “Lost Prophets,” a film by Nat Apffel. “Lost Prophets” is an artistically done movie about the non-competitive side of surfing – the side that uses surfing for personal growth and enjoyment, the side of surfing that most of us can relate to.

Bring lawn chairs and blankets for the event. If it rains, we will move inside the surf shop.

The showing takes place in the parking lot of Greenhouse Boardshop and Juice Bar and Ritas. Or inside if it rains!
