Ocean Night this Thursday!

Hello, everyone!

After you’re done marveling at the near-record highs we’ve been having along the coast this week, come join Humboldt BaykeeperOcean Conservancy and Humboldt Surfrider on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. for Ocean Night at the Arcata Theatre Lounge. We have some good news about the Marine Life Protection Act moving forward on the North Coast and a fun night of ocean-themed films for you!

First, experience Ancient Sea Turtles Stranded in the Modern World, a look at the sea turtle’s migration over thousands of miles and lasting decades before finally returning as a giant adult to the very beach where its life began, completing a cycle that has endured for 100 million years. The movie examines the many threats to ancient sea turtles: poaching, entanglement in fishing gear, destruction of nesting sites and pollution of the oceans.

Chuck DeWitt of Humboldt Baykeeper will also discuss Project Tortuga — background here.

Next up, Lost in the Ether, Andrew Kidman’s latest film focusing on particular surfboard designs, the shapers who create them and the process they undertake. Kidman says Lost In The Ether is a film for the “surfing purist,” made for surfers with a keen sense of surfing history.

Ocean Night is an all-ages event. A donation of $3 is requested at the door. Films start at 7 p.m. A raffle takes place after the second movie.

See you there!
