Zion I & The Grouch + Humboldt Surfrider! March 23

Zion I & The Grouch

West Coast hip-hop heroes Zion I and The Grouch bring their “Healing Of The Nation” tour to Humboldt Brewery, Wednesday, March 23 at 9:30 p.m. For their Arcata stop, $3 of every online advance ticket sale through zioniandthegrouch.com goes directly to Humboldt Surfrider!

The tour celebrates Zion I and The Grouch’s sophomore collaborative effort, Heroes in the Healing of the Nation, the much-anticipated follow-up to the group’s 2006 critically acclaimed Heroes in the City of Dope. This time around the group invites listeners everywhere to join them on their quest in channeling their highest selves. “Anyone changing other peoples lives for the better is a hero to me,” explains The Grouch. “People are going through a difficult transition these days,” adds Zumbi. “We want this album to aid in that process.”

Opening acts include Blu, The Shotgun Wedding Quintet and Distant Relatives. The show is 21-and-over. Humboldt Brewery is located at 856 10th St. For more information, visit humboldtbrews.com.

The Absynth Quintet (finally) plays for Humboldt Surfrider

Who's excited to play Ocean Night?

Those banjo players are quick, but the stand-up bass and Tofu’s drum kit weighed down the Absynth Quintet boys just long enough for us to catch up to them, grab’em by an ear and say, “Play for us, darn you!” Knowing what was good for them, they put on their smilingest faces and promised to show up at Arcata Theatre Lounge for our August 5 Ocean Night. Now that we’ve corralled them, please make it worth everyone’s while by coming out to support great music and important causes.

As always, Ocean Night is sponsored by Humboldt Surfrider, Humboldt Baykeeper and Ocean Conservancy. It’s all ages and we’re asking a $3-$10 donation – a bit more than usual, but it’s an extra-special and slightly more expensive night – clearly, a total bargain! (Also seeking business sponsorships – email humboldt@surfrider.org.)

Films for the Thursday, Aug. 5 event are:

Can you break the habit?

Bag It – Is Your Life Too Plastic?

Shelter, from the Moonshine Conspiracy:

We’re also featuring a video from Team Marine and some cool underwater freediving footage from locals Andrew Weltz and Kirby Morejohn.

Save the Surf

Humboldt’s surf culture is defined by a freezing-cold ocean, big waves and even bigger sharks, according to Jennifer Savage, the chairperson of Surfrider Foundation Humboldt Chapter.

But the thrill of dropping into a thick, juicy wave, that could just as easily snap a fiberglass surfboard as it could a human spine, emotionally surpasses all the obstacles the North Coast ocean waters present to its wave riders.

In an effort to keep local waters clean, Humboldt Surfrider is having a membership drive at Arcata Theatre Lounge on Saturday at 6 p.m.

”We’re hoping to get a whole bunch of new members to raise both money and awareness about our ongoing projects, including improving access and amenities at Moonstone Beach, filling water-quality data gaps on the North Coast and encouraging people to transcend single-use plastics,” Savage said.
