Greenhouse movie night/party at Arcata Theatre – Friday!

ripple-effect-face

First, thanks to everyone who came out to BlueGreen last week – the turnout was great and your Humboldt Chapter of Surfrider Foundation is once again humbled by your support.

Second, Monty’s throwing a major party at the newly remodeled and reopened Arcata Theatre Lounge this Friday night! If you haven’t been to ATL yet, it’s amazing inside! With pub food, beer and wine, and tiered table-and-chair seating, a huge screen and stage – super fun. In addition to showing the new film by Glas, Greenhouse has two bands (locals Lik’wefi and touring act LionSight) and a huge raffle (including a Patagonia wetsuit and Firewire board) happening. Tickets are only $6 and the event is all ages until the movie/raffle ends!

Hear Lik’wefi from a live performance on KHUM 104.3 FM:

All proceeds from the raffle benefit Humboldt Surfrider – thanks, Monty! – plus, we’ll have T-shirts and hoodies for sale. (This time, dark blue with white logos!)

More details throughout the week… as well as an update on the various issues and projects we have going on… which means plenty of volunteer opportunities coming up!

Greenhouse + Shawn Griggs = $$$ and fun!

Hey, folks! This Friday evening during Arts!Arcata Greenhouse Boardshop hosts a Humboldt Surfrider art and wine benefit (thanks, Monty and Conny!).

The übercool art of Shawn Griggs already adorns Greenhouse’s walls and Shawn will continue to create art – live and in person! – at the shop during the event. Proceeds from cafe and wine sales help the Surfrider Foundation’s Humboldt Chapter continue its mission of providing access to safe and clean beaches throughout the North Coast.

See you there!

High surf to hit North Coast today

From the T-S:

A massive ocean swell with waves up to 20 feet is expected to crash into the North Coast today and grow in intensity until early Sunday, just as crab fishermen leave harbor for the first day of the Dungeness crab season.

As large storms build in the Gulf of Alaska, a large northwest swell — with waves between 18 and 20 feet — will make its way to the shores of Humboldt County by Saturday afternoon, said National Weather Service meteorologist Mark Burger.

Those waves are expected to build to their maximum height Sunday morning, before tapering off through the early part of the week, he said.

once again, FRIDAY, OCT. 10th

FRIDAY, OCT. 10th!!!

Way back in 1991, Surfrider Foundation won a landmark health victory in Humboldt County, making both the waves and beaches a safer place for the community to enjoy.

We’re fortunate that, unlike most of California’s coastline, we don’t struggle with the constant effects of pollution, but still, we’re hardly safe – and we need to be at the table as discussions about our coastal future take place.

For example: the threat of offshore oil drilling, questions about wave energy, rotting styrofoam dock moorings littering our beaches (thanks, Hugh and Bill for pointing those out)… these are just a few concerns those who care about Humboldt’s beaches, ocean and waves have shared.

So, Surfrider Foundation Humboldt Chapter is coming back.

But before we get too serious, we’re planning to have fun!

Please come out to the Surfrider Shindig at the Wharfinger Building, Friday, Oct. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. We’ll have beer, wine, snacks and music – and catch up on what’s been happening with Humboldt Surfriders and where we’re going now.

Help needed! Volunteer, join or get info through humboldt@surfrider.org.
